What's the difference between a custom-fit mouthguard and a boil-and-bite?
A custom mouthguard is made from an impression of your actual teeth, creating a secure, comfortable fit that stays in place during training and competition. Unlike boil-and-bite guards, which rely on a self-molded approximation, a custom mouthguard provides superior retention, comfort, airflow, and durability. The result is a lower-profile guard that allows athletes to focus on performance without constantly adjusting their protection.
Do you make custom mouthguards for basketball and other team sports?
Yes. Impact Dental Designs mouthguards are used by athletes in football, basketball, lacrosse, hockey, wrestling, and many other contact sports. A custom fit helps the mouthguard stay securely in place while allowing athletes to breathe, communicate, and compete comfortably while providing superior protection.
Are these the same mouthguards UFC fighters and professional athletes wear?
Yes. Every Impact Dental Designs mouthguard is made using the same materials, fabrication process, and attention to detail regardless of skill level. Whether you're a professional athlete or just getting started, you'll receive the same level of protection and craftsmanship.
How long does it take to make a mouthguard?
For first time customers our typical turnaround time is approximately 5 weeks from the time you place your order. First orders take significantly more time because we have to send you your at-home molding kit which needs to be completed and returned before we can start making your guard.
Turnaround times may vary depending on design complexity, seasonal demand, and shipping times. If you have a specific deadline, please contact us before ordering at support@impactdentaldesigns.com
Why are shipping costs higher on first-time orders?
First-time orders require multiple shipments. We send your impression kit, provide a prepaid return label for your completed impressions, and then ship your finished custom mouthguard. The shipping charge covers the entire process from start to finish.
How long do custom mouthguards last?
Most athletes can expect their mouthguard to last up to two years with proper care. Lifespan depends on frequency of use, bite habits, and changes to your teeth. Growing athletes may require replacement sooner as their dental structures develop.
How do I know when it's time to replace my mouthguard?
The most common sign is a loss of retention. If your mouthguard no longer stays securely in place, replacement may be necessary. Visible wear, cracking, thinning material, or separation between layers are also signs that it's time for a new guard.
Can I get a mouthguard if I have braces?
Yes. Because braces require additional space and protection, our standard at-home impression kits cannot be used. Instead, a digital intraoral scan is required. This can be completed by your local dentist or at our New York office.
Please contact us before ordering so we can guide you through the process at support@implactdentaldesigns.com
Can I continue using my mouthguard after dental work?
Minor dental treatment such as fillings usually will not affect the fit of your mouthguard. However, major dental work—including braces, extractions, crowns, bridges, implants, or other orthodontic treatment—may require a new impression and replacement guard.
Why do serious athletes choose custom mouthguards over boil-and-bite options?
Custom mouthguards provide a level of fit, comfort, and retention that cannot be achieved with self-molded products. Because they are fabricated from your exact dental impression, they remain secure during training and competition while offering superior comfort and long-term durability.
How does Impact Dental Designs ensure a precise fit?
Every mouthguard begins with a detailed dental impression or digital scan. Each guard is then fabricated specifically for the athlete using a process developed by Dr. Andrew Sarowitz, DDS, with a focus on retention, comfort, and performance.
What areas does a custom mouthguard help protect?
Custom mouthguards help protect the teeth, gums, lips, tongue, jawbone, TMJ, and surrounding oral structures from impact-related injuries. They are designed to absorb and distribute forces that can occur during contact sports and training.
Can a custom mouthguard improve athletic performance?
A properly fitted mouthguard can improve comfort, breathing, and communication compared to poorly fitting alternatives. By eliminating distractions caused by loose or bulky mouthguards, athletes can focus more effectively on training and competition.
What materials are used in Impact Dental Designs mouthguards?
Impact Dental Designs mouthguards are fabricated using premium multi-layer thermoplastic materials selected for durability, comfort, and impact absorption. The layered construction helps disperse forces while maintaining a secure and comfortable fit.
Are Impact Dental Designs mouthguards dentist-designed?
This is one of your biggest differentiators and should probably have its own FAQ.
Do you offer discounts for teams, gyms, and schools?
Yes! We can offer bulk discounts or even site visits depending on the location and order size. To discuss options please contact us at support@impactdentaldesigns.com
What if I don't get a perfect impression on my first attempt?
Each impression kit comes with two sets of material or two chances to capture a great mold of your teeth. If you can't get it on the first try we encourage everyone to reach out at support@impactdentaldesigns.com before using the second attempt so that we can give some pointers or even set up a zoom call for some extra help.
Are your mouthguards covered by a warranty or guarantee?
Impact Dental Designs is the only mouthguard brand with a dental guarantee. If you have any questions please email us at support@impactdentaldsigns.com
Do you ship internationally?
Yes! But, due to customs regulations we are unable to provide return shipping labels. First time customers would have to ship their molding kits back on their own. Other than that the process is exactly the same.
