Impact Dental Designs FAQ

In high-impact sports, equipment selection and preparation matter. For athletes who train and compete in contact environments, a mouthguard is not an accessory—it is a piece of protective dental equipment designed to help manage force to the teeth and jaw during impact. Impact Dental Designs operates with that reality in mind.

We do not produce generic, boil-and-bite guards or one-size solutions. Each custom mouthguard is fabricated from individual dental impressions and built using dentist-designed engineering principles that account for occlusion, TMJ considerations, and secure retention. This approach prioritizes fit accuracy, material integrity, and repeat-use durability in demanding training and competition settings.

Under the clinical direction of Dr. Andrew Sarowitz, Impact Dental Designs applies the same design priorities used across combat sports environments where equipment reliability matters. Our custom mouthguards are trusted by athletes competing in the UFC, PFL, Bellator, and ONE Championship—not because of marketing claims, but because they are built to stay properly seated, maintain comfort, and hold up through contact, travel, and consistent use.

When athletes step into training or competition, an Impact Dental Designs custom mouthguard is designed to provide consistent fit and positioning without unnecessary bulk or movement. It is a practical solution for athletes who require dentist-designed dental protection built for high-impact sport—focused on function, durability, and precision rather than exaggeration or trend-driven design.

Are these the same mouthguards the UFC fighters wear?

Absolutely! They're built to the exact specifications as the professionals.

How long does it take to make a guard?

The normal turnaround time is about 5 weeks but that can fluctuate based on the complexity of the design and how quickly the molds are returned. If you have a specific date you need your mouthguard by please send us a message.

Why is the shipping cost so expensive?

All first time purchases have to be triple shipped which adds to the total cost. A molding kit is shipped to you with an included pre-paid return label. Then once we complete your guard it's shipped back to you.

How long do the mouthguards last?

Depending on the frequency of use the typical shelf life can approach two years. An exception would be in kids/teenagers who are still growing. In those cases the guards would likely need to be replaced after one year or sports season. Another exception would be combat sports athletes who use their guard for every training session. We recommend reserving the mouthguard for sparring and competition. If you use it more selectively it can last for two years or more.

How do when I know it’s time to replace my mouthguard?

The most important sign to look for is reduced retention. What that means is that the guard will fall out more easily when your mouth is opened. Another sign would be any kind of separation of the layers of the guard. That can happen after repeated biting/clenching.

Can I get a guard made if I have braces?

You can get a mouthguard made with braces Yes! But, the molding kits won't work. You would need to get an intraoral scan digitally and have that sent to our lab. If you're local we can do that here in New York but if you're not you can have that done at any local dental office. We can also sometimes offer a courtesy discount. If you're considering  purchasing a guard for an athlete with braces shoot us a message and we can help coordinate.

Can I use my guard after I’ve had dental work done?

The short answer is yes. For most routine and minor dental work the mouthguard should still fit. However for major work it may have an effect. We would consider major work to be; ortho/braces, teeth extractions or removal, crown and bridge work, dental implants. Things like fillings should not cause any issues.

Why are custom mouthguards superior to boil-and-bite options for elite athletes?

Custom mouthguards are fabricated from individual dental impressions, allowing for a precise, stable fit that stays seated during high-impact training and competition. Unlike boil-and-bite options, which rely on self-molding and approximation, custom mouthguards are designed around proper occlusion, retention, and jaw positioning. This construction helps manage impact forces more evenly across the dental arch rather than concentrating pressure in isolated areas. A secure, low-profile fit also allows for more natural breathing and speech compared to bulkier, poorly fitting over-the-counter guards, which is important during intense training and competition.

Takeaway: Choose a dentist-designed custom mouthguard for a more consistent fit, controlled force distribution, and reliable retention compared to boil-and-bite alternatives used in high-impact sports.

How does Impact Dental Designs ensure a precise, pro-level fit for every athlete?

Impact Dental Designs ensures a precise, custom fit by using a dentist-designed at-home impression process rather than self-molded boil-and-bite materials. After an order is placed, athletes receive a molding kit with clear instructions and a prepaid return label, allowing them to capture accurate impressions of their teeth, bite, and occlusion. This impression-based process provides the foundation for a mouthguard built to the athlete’s actual anatomy—not an approximation.

Once impressions are returned, each custom mouthguard is fabricated using dentist-designed engineering principles that account for occlusion, TMJ considerations, and secure retention. This approach reflects the clinical standards emphasized at Impact Dental Designs, informed by over 15 years of experience from New York City–based sports dentist Dr. Andrew Sarowitz working with elite athletes in high-impact environments. The result is a custom mouthguard for MMA and other high-impact sports designed to maintain consistent positioning during contact and hold its shape through repeated training and competition. This same design approach is used across Impact Dental Designs’ mouthguards worn by athletes competing in the UFC, PFL, Bellator, and ONE Championship, without relying on boil-and-bite molding or oversized materials.

Takeaway: Impact Dental Designs achieves a consistent, competition-ready fit by combining a dentist-designed at-home impression kit with custom fabrication built for high-impact training and combat sports.

What specific dental and oral structures do custom mouthguards protect?

Custom mouthguards from Impact Dental Designs primarily protect the teeth, gums, lips, and tongue from direct impact and lacerations. They also play a crucial role in safeguarding the jawbone and temporomandibular joints (TMJ) by absorbing and distributing forces from blows. By creating a cushion between the upper and lower teeth, they prevent tooth fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue injuries. This comprehensive protection extends to reducing the risk of jaw fractures and concussions by stabilizing the head and neck during impact.

Takeaway: Understand that a custom mouthguard protects your teeth, soft tissues, jaw, and helps reduce concussion risk.

Can a custom mouthguard improve an athlete's performance in competition?

Yes, a custom mouthguard can significantly enhance an athlete's performance by ensuring unrestricted breathing and clear communication, which are vital during intense competition. Unlike ill-fitting generic guards that can obstruct airflow and cause discomfort, a custom-fitted guard allows for optimal oxygen intake, reducing fatigue and improving stamina. The secure fit also eliminates distractions, letting athletes focus entirely on their strategy and execution. This combination of physical and mental advantages directly translates to better on-field or in-ring performance.

Takeaway:Choose a custom mouthguard to optimize breathing, communication, and focus, directly boosting your athletic performance.

What materials does Impact Dental Designs use for maximum durability and protection?

Impact Dental Designs uses a proprietary blend of high-grade, multi-layer thermoplastic polymers engineered for superior shock absorption and long-lasting durability. These materials are selected for their ability to withstand extreme impact forces while remaining comfortable and flexible. Our guards often feature multiple layers with varying densities, strategically placed to maximize protection in critical areas and distribute impact energy effectively. This advanced material science ensures the mouthguard maintains its integrity and protective qualities through countless training sessions and competitions.

Takeaway:Rely on Impact Dental Designs' advanced multi-layer polymer materials for unmatched durability and superior impact protection.
